RiverWinds Fee Increase Passes First Reading

If finalized, membership fees for Township residents would increase about 5.5 to 7 percent, raising about $81,000 in revenues.

Fees for use of the RiverWinds Community Center are likely to increase in the not-too-distant future. The first reading of an ordinance that would increase membership fees along a sliding scale passed a West Deptford Township Committee vote by a majority at the Thursday meeting. If approved at subsequent readings, the measure could raise some $81,365 in additional revenues for the financially beleagured facility. The range of proposed fees presented to the Comittee by the RiverWinds Advisory Board (R.W.A.B.), which was introduced at its March 2013 meeting, ranged from a 2-percent, across-the-board increase, which would generate $28,963 in revenues, to a 10 percent flat increase that would raise $144,816 in revenues. The final …

RiverWinds Budget Concerns Top Committee Meeting

The senior discount age is likely to move from 55 to 62, and members likely can expect a fee increase as well.

Financial matters topped the agenda at the March meeting of the West Deptford Township Committee, and foremost among them was the issue of bringing the RiverWinds Community Center out of the red. Bill list  Committeeman Sam Cianfarini asked questions about a number of financial items on the Township budget, including refunds of RiverWinds membership costs. Township administrator Eric Campo pointed out that the current contract for West Deptford police and firefighters allows for the full cost of a family membership to be reimbursed. RiverWinds employees also enjoy a 75 percent reimbursement of the cost of a family membership, he said.  “Do we do anything like what corporate America does where there’s a validation that you’re actually using…

If Riverwinds is in such bad shape financially, I would rescind all discounts for anybody. Sure police and firemen deserve a discount, also seniors, employees, you name it. Where does it end. I say no discounts for anybody. Get to the point where we can comfortably pay our bills and debt and only then reconsider the possibility of discounts.   more ›

RiverWinds to Get a Boost from Proposed Revenue, Cost-Cutting Measures

A handful of proposals could bring the facility closer to breaking even on its costs, says RiverWinds Board Chairman Jeff Hansen.

"When you say West Deptford, people think of the RiverWinds," said Jeff Hansen, chairman of the advisory board of the facility, "and that’s a good thing because it’s beautiful down there." The RiverWinds just celebrated its 10th anniversary in April 2012, and the celebrated municipal recreational complex remains a "one-of-a-kind" entity in South Jersey, Hansen said. But the RiverWinds is still not turning a profit or even running at a sustainable rate, Hansen said. So the advisory board is working with RiverWinds management on a number of proposals to help generate additional revenues and cut costs. Among the most successful has been opening up membership at the facility to non-West Deptford residents, an initiative Hansen said brought in …

Agreed that, for a special designated investigative committee charged with finding creative solutions; this was more of a bunt than a home run. A WDHS sophomore with with legal pad, calculator and a 40 minute Study Hall could have come up with these "solutions"   more ›

New Leadership Set to Take Charge of Planning Board

With former chairman Scott Kintzing and former board secretary Fred Purnell not re-appointed, Tuesday night's planning board reorganization will feature a lot of changes.

Tuesday night will represent a turning of the page for the West Deptford planning board. The reorganization meeting, which is set for 7 p.m. at the West Deptford Municipal Building, will feature a change in leadership as former chairman Scott Kintzing and secretary Fred Purnell were not re-appointed to the board by Mayor Raymond Chintall earlier this month. Both had served on the board for 31 years. Chintall instead appointed three new members to the planning board. They are former alternate Dick Wagner, Joe Monahan and Jeff Hansen, who ran in the 2012 township committee election as the Republican candidate. All three of them will be sworn in on Tuesday. Chintall said the changes were made to give the planning board some fresh, new ideas …

Kintzing Not Reappointed to Planning Board

Mayor Raymond Chintall says the decision not to reappoint the township planning board chairman has nothing to do with a pending lewdness charge against KIntzing.

Scott Kintzing's long tenure on the township planning board is over.  Kintzing was not reappointed during the towship committee's reorganization meeting Thursday night.  Kintzing and former planning board secretary Fred Purnell were not reappointed after both serving the township for 31 years. Instead, Republican Mayor Raymond Chintall reappointed Joe Nahas and Joe Monahan—who previously served as an alternate on the board. In addition, Chintall appointed Jeff Hansen, who also was reappointed to the RiverWinds advisory board.  Hansen—a Republican who's already a familiar face at township committee meetings—ran unsuccessfully against Committeewoman Denice DiCarlo for her seat on the committee this past year. Chintall says that he made …

DiCarlo Formally Declared Winner in West Deptford Committee Race

The Democrat narrowly defeated GOP challenger Jeff Hansen in the race for township committee, according to election results certified Tuesday.

After weeks of waiting, Democrat Denice DiCarlo can officially celebrate her victory in the township committee race.  The results of the close race were certified Tuesday afternoon by the Gloucester County Board of Elections, exactly three weeks after the Nov. 6 election.  Preliminary results after the polls closed on election night showed DiCarlo ahead in the race by just 99 votes.  Ultimately, DiCarlo defeated GOP challenger Jeff Hansen by 140 votes, according to the certified results. The final vote tally was 5,213 to 5073, with 11 write-in votes, once all provisional ballots and any cast remotely by residents displaced by Superstorm Sandy were counted.  Hurricane Sandy disrupted the election process across New Jersey, and Gloucester …

DiCarlo Lead Widens as Vote Certification Nears

Challenger Jeff Hansen hasn't conceded the race, but updated vote totals stack up in incumbent Denice DiCarlo's favor.

Denice DiCarlo’s lead over challenger Jeff Hansen for a West Deptford Township Committee seat has grown as the county continues to count ballots. As of Friday, the vote totals stood at 5,212 to 5,066, with provisional ballots included. The 146-vote lead has increased from the 99 votes that separated DiCarlo, a Democrat, and Hansen, a Republican, on Election Day. The county must certify the votes by Wednesday, Nov. 21. Superstorm Sandy, which displaced many voters around New Jersey, accounts for the delay in certification. Gov. Chris Christie ordered election boards to accept ballots until Nov. 19. “Some counties are still working to separate the displaced voters and may not have sent us all eligible ballots for displaced Gloucester County …

Hansen got destroyed yet again and this is a clear indictment of the vindictive political smear campaigns of Chintall & Cianfarini. The people have had enough of you two. Try to govern and stop politicizing every single issue. You two have accomplished nothing in an entire year.   more ›

West Deptford GOP Not Conceding Committee Race Just Yet

Township GOP chairman Denny Forte said the party is "weighing all available options" after a race that was decided by just 99 votes.

As far as the local Republican Party is concerned, the township committee race isn't over.  While not formally calling for a recount, party officials hinted they're considering the possibility.  In a statement released Wednesday afternoon, township GOP chairman Denny Forte said: "The election is still too close call and due to the provisional ballots which are yet to be counted, the WDGOP and its candidate Jeff Hansen are refraining from making any statement until every vote is counted. We are weighing all available options." Democratic township Committeewoman Denice DiCarlo defeated Hansen by just 99 votes on Tuesday, according to unofficial election results.  Gloucester County spokeswoman Debra Sellitto said late Tuesday that all …

I don't think it is fair to make a decision until all of the votes are counted. The provisional votes count as much as any other, and a vote this close everything has to be considered. The people did speak, and I think the resounding message that was spoken is the township is deeply divided. I do not think a clear message came out of the voting that a vast majority would like to see one candidate…   more ›
