The Eagles get bounced by Medford Tech, 71-50, in the South Jersey, Group 2 playoffs.
Justin Hansen became the second West Deptford player in the past two years to crack the 1,000-point scoring mark, but the Eagles couldn't contend with the relentless offense of Medford Tech, dropping out of the South Jersey, Group 2 playoffs with a 71-50 loss Wednesday. Hansen, who scored 14, and Tyler Leonhardt (15 points) combined for the bulk of West Deptford's offense, which started out quick but couldn't keep up with Medford Tech, which piled up 27 points in the first quarter, mostly behind the shooting of Myles Powell, who drained four three-pointers in the first on his way to 27 points for the game. While the loss ended the season for the Eagles, the team's 19 wins and first-ever playoff home win are enough to give the team hope for…

The West Deptford boys basketball team defeated Overbook, 77-42, in the first round of the Group 2 playoffs. Meanwhile, the girls basketball team was eliminated.
Don Clark paused for a minute as he tried to think back to the last time the West Deptford High School boys basketball program won a home playoff game. After thinking for a brief moment, the Eagles head coach came to what he believed to be an accurate response. “I don’t know if they ever did,” said Clark. Yes, Monday night was a special evening for the West Deptford boys basketball program as the No. 6 Eagles took it to No. 11 Overbrook, 77-42, in the first round of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 2 playoffs. The Eagles, who tied a school record with their 19th win, led by just nine points at the half, but exploded on a 27-11 run in the third quarter to put the game away. Junior guard Justin Hansen led the way with 21 points, leaving him …

Haddonfield uses a 17-0 run in the final 2:30 of the first half to take control of the game.
Thursday night was an exhibition in what can be accomplished in a short period of time. For instance, the West Deptford High School boys’ basketball team was able to hold Haddonfield scoreless for the first two minutes, 30 seconds of its Colonial Conference Liberty Division rivalry game against Haddonfield. The Bulldawgs did something a little more spectacular with the final 2:30 of the first half. They scored 17 unanswered points. Haddonfield turned an eight-point deficit into a nine-point halftime lead over the final 2:30 of the first half and pulled away in the second half for a convincing 67-40 win. “It was just a lot of energy plays that got us going there,” said Haddonfield forward Chris Biddle, who had seven points in that span. “We…

West Deptford boys' basketball took another top team to the wire, but fell in overtime, 72-68.
It wasn’t so long ago that the West Deptford High School boys’ basketball team would enter a gym like the one at Sterling and hope simply to leave the gym with a somewhat respectable score. Yet, there was junior Sean Langan with the ball in his hands as time was about to expire in regulation of a tie game between the Eagles and Knights. Langan rose up and released a shot that that, while slightly tipped, still looked like it was destined to swish through the net. The shot didn’t go in, and the Eagles would later fall in overtime, 72-68, but the moment was none-the-less symbolic of the type of rise the program has seen in a short period of time. West Deptford is at the point where it can now go on the road and go toe-to-toe with some of the…

The West Deptford boys' basketball team jumped out to an 18-4 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in a victory against Collingswood.
Don Clark has spent the early portion of the season preaching the importance of getting off to fast starts to his West Deptford High School boys' basketball team. The message is clearly getting through. The Eagles have held a first-quarter lead in all five of its games so far this season, and Thursday’s performance may have been the most dominant opening-quarter yet. The Eagles jumped out to a 18-4 lead and cruised to a 64-47 win over Collingswood in Colonial Conference Liberty Division action. “We have been doing that all season,” West Deptford junior guard Justin Hansen said. “During the summer league and fall league, we were coming out with sluggish starts and falling behind by 10-point deficits. We know we have to come out fast against…

The boys' basketball team has four new starters this season, but expects to move forward, not back.
There is a different feeling around the West Deptford High School boys’ basketball program these days. Some of it comes from the fact that therehas been a major roster turnover from a year ago, but most of it comes from all of the winning that has been going on over the past 12 months. Last year, the team surprised many by reaching the playoffs after winning a combined eight games the previous two seasons. The program followed with success during the fall and summer and now is looking to make a major statement as the regular season is set to tip-off today. “I think (the new attitude) has kind of been a culmination of winning last year, making the playoffs and then going 7-3 in summer league, 3-3 at team camp and winning the fall league,” …

West Deptford fell in the first round of the playoffs, 69-41, to Barnegat.
After spending three months defying expectations and proving doubters wrong, the West Deptford High School boys’ basketball team finally ran out of steam Tuesday night. Back in the playoffs for the first time in four seasons, No. 12 West Deptford could not muster a perfect ending to their season of rise, falling to No. 5 Barnegat, 69-41. “I think it was just one of those things where the bubble just burst,” said West Deptford head coach Don Clark. “I think they did as much as they could for as long as they could all season, and it just came to an end. The seniors took us as far as we could go.” The Eagles came out of the gates ready for a showdown, and built a 9-8 lead midway through the first quarter. However, Barnegat scored the next …

The Eagles rolled out to a 24-15 halftime lead on their way to a 58-39 win Thursday night.
The West Deptford boys' basketball team has proved it can still compete down a man, posting a 2-1 record in the last week without starting point guard Justin Hansen. With Hansen finally back on the court Thursday night and the team at full strength, Haddon Township never stood a chance. The Eagles rolled behind Hansen and Tom Jakubowski, who combined for 36 points, crushing the visiting Hawks, 58-39. Hansen, who was back after an absence due to a viral infection, didn't start, but came off the bench to contribute in a hurry, scoring 15, including a second-quarter trey off a Haddon Township turnover that seemed to break the Hawks' spirit and shift the momentum permanently West Deptford's way. Jakubowski, meanwhile, dropped 21 on the night …

The Eagles have now won twice as many games as last season.
Check off another box on the to-do list of the West Deptford High School boys’ basketball team. Win No. 12 is in the books. West Deptford dominated the final two quarters for the second-straight game to score a 60-44 win against Lindenwold, and in doing so, picked up its 12th win of the season. That accounts for twice as many wins as the team recorded last year and six times as many as it did two years ago, when the Eagles went a dismal 2-24. “We doubled our win total from last year, and that was one of our goals,” said West Deptford head coach Don Clark. “We wanted to get to 12 wins, and we did that—and we still have four games left and the playoffs.” The Eagles were able to out-pace Lindenwold despite being without starting point guard …

Justin Hansen has averaged 15.3 points per game over West Deptford's last three contests.
From the first time he saw Justin Hansen step on the court, West Deptford High School boys basketball coach Don Clark knew he had a player with the type of skill set he could build around. So the coach wasted no time throwing him into the fire, even if it meant plenty of bumps and bruises during his freshman season. Hansen started right out of the gates for the Eagles last year, showing flashes of playmaking ability, while experiencing both turnover and confidence issues that would be expected from any young player. But Hansen kept working and Clark kept playing him. A light seemed to come on during the final two games of the 2010-11 season when Hansen scored 21 and 16 points. But even then, things weren't going quite as well as they are …
