West Deptford Sports Update

100s for West Deptford Softballers

Amanda Schramm earned her 100th career victory last week. Not long after, two of her players knocked in their 100th hits.

It was a week of hundreds for the West Deptford softball team. First, senior Sydney Ponto wrapped up the centenary victory for coach Amanda Schramm in a 14-strikeout, one-hit shutout of Sterling. Then, Ponto and teammate Marissa Linquist made a little noise of their own, notching the 100th hits of their high school careers in a 12-0 stomping of Lindenwold. They did it within two at-bats of one another. Linquist was 2-for-3 at the plate in the game, scoring once, doubling, and knocking in 4 RBIs. She also pitched 5 innings for the win, walking only two batters in the process. Ponto's hit was her only one in the contest, but she also scored three times. The duo, which have helped turn the team into a force in the conference, "have worked …

Three Eagles to Continue Athletic Careers at D-2 Level

Brandon McCall, Marissa Linquist and Sydney Ponto signed letters of intent Tuesday.

When Brandon McCall, Marissa Linquist and Sydney Ponto take to their respective diamonds this spring, each will do so feeling a little less pressure on their arms, bats and minds. The trio of student-athletes at West Deptford High School signed letters of intent to continue their academic and athletic careers at the collegiate level. McCall, a member of the Eagles baseball team, expressed both excitement and relief about his decision to attend Limestone College—a Division 2 school in South Carolina. The West Deptford senior had his sights set on attending a Southern school and got his wish after impressing the Limestone coaching staff. He received a call a few days after attending a camp and found out the school was interested in offering …

Congrats to all three ballplayers. I had the honor of coaching Marissa and Sydney as little leaguers, and knew they were headed for college ball one day. All the best! Jim Knoblock   more ›

It's Destiny! West Deptford Freshman Leads Softball to Playoff Win

Destiny Thurston had two doubles and three RBIs in West Deptford's 11-1 win over Willingboro in the opening round of the NJSIAA Group 2 playoffs.

Destiny Thurston said she felt the butterflies of being in her first playoff game with the West Deptford High School softball team. If that was in fact the case, the Eagles’ freshman certainly didn’t let it be seen. Thurston connected on doubles in each of her first two at-bats, driving in three runs, as No. 6 West Deptford overwhelmed No. 11 Willingboro, 11-1, in five innings in the opening round of the NJSIAA South Jersey, Group 2 playoffs. “That felt good,” Thurston said of her big swings. “Finally! I have been in and out of my hitting, so it felt good to hit like that and get runs in.” Thurston’s teammates were excited for her and are hoping it will propel her to even bigger things in the coming days. “It’s a great confidence booster…

West Deptford Softball Peppers Haddon Township

The Eagles' bats were red-hot Wednesday in a 10-0 win over Haddon Township.

Entering Tuesday’s game against St. Joe’s, the West Deptford High School softball team was in the midst of its greatest offensive stretch in years. The Eagles had produced 50 runs in a stretch of three games, going 3-0. Then the Eagles ran into Dominique Dandrea, who cooled off the West Deptford bats, surrendering only two runs and striking out 13 in a St. Joe's victory. However, as Wednesday proved, Dandrea’s effort only sprinkled a little water on the Eagles flames, allowing the fire to spark right back up. West Deptford’s offense returned to form against Haddon Heights, as the team pounded out five doubles in a 10-0, five inning Colonial Conference victory. “Coming off the loss yesterday, it was good to come back,” said shortstop …

West Deptford Softball Tops Cherokee With Baserunning Smarts

The Eagles got a heads-up play from Katie Boyd to win Saturday.

Katie Boyd managed some nifty baserunning to score the game-winner, and Marissa Linquist bounced back from a rough season opener against Paul VI to pitch seven strong innings and lead West Deptford to a 2-1 win over Cherokee Saturday. With the score tied at 1-1 in the fourth, Boyd reached first on a fielder’s choice, stole second and went to third on an error, then scored on a passed ball to give West Deptford the lead for good. Linquist, who scored the game’s first run off an RBI single by Summer Wenzel, was in command on the mound, fanning six batters and allowing only one walk to beat Cherokee. Morgan Brown also managed a solid game at the plate, ripping a double, her third in the last two games. The girls are back in action Tuesday, …
