The former West Deptford High School high jumper continues to make a big impression at the collegiate level as she finishes second in the Southern Conference Championships.
Former West Deptford track and field star Megan Kirschling is finishing up her first indoor season with a flourish, as she was named to the All-Freshmen team at the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships last weekend. Kirschling, who has impressed in her freshman year with Elon University, finished second in the high jump, finishing at 5 feet, 7 inches. Samford senior Chenelle Terry was the only jumper to eclipse Kirschling's mark, winning the competition with a jump of 5 feet, 8.75 inches. Kirchsling's effort earned her team eight points. Elon went on to finish second to Samford at the end of the competition. Despite falling just short of taking first place at the Southern Conference championships, Kirschling still …

The West Deptford grad notches another record and earns conference honors in the process.
West Deptford grad Megan Kirschling is proving herself a force early in the winter track season at Elon University, racking up another school record and conference honors this week. Kirschling, who broke Elon’s high jump record in her first meet earlier this winter, leaped 5-10 at the Gene Anderson Invitational in Chapel Hill, NC, this weekend, breaking her own school record and earning Southern Conference’s Women’s Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors in the process, the conference announced Wednesday. It was the best mark of the season for Kirschling, and the best mark of any jumper in the conference for 2012-13, and was her second title of the season. Kirschling has jumped 5-8 twice this season, setting the record at the …

Megan Kirschling set the Elon University high-jump record in her first college meet, winning the high jump at the Liberty Kickoff Classic.
It hasn't taken Megan Kirschling long to make a huge impression on the college level. The former West Deptford High School track and field star pushed her college career at Elon University off to a fast start, as she broke the school record for high jump in her very first collegiate meet. Competing in the Liberty Kickoff Classic for the Phoenix on Dec. 1, Kirschling topped out in the high jump at a height of 5-8. Her jump easily won her the competition, as no other competitor got above 5-4.25. Her jump broke the school's previous record of 5-5.75 that was set last year. Kirschling's performance in the season-opening meet was impressive, but not totally surprising for many of those who saw her perform for the Eagles last year. As a matter …

Megan Kirschling took silver in the high jump, while Megan Knoblock was seventh in the 1,500.
Megan Kirschling’s trip to the Junior Olympics in Baltimore turned into a war of attrition. With 51 competitors from around the nation taking to the field at Morgan State University Saturday, the high jump became a marathon, stretching across four hours in the worst of the heat. And at the end of it, Kirschling was the silver medalist and an All-American. “Really, it was pretty brutal,” she said. “I still think it went pretty well, considering I haven't really been able to jump except in the qualifying events.” Fighting the huge field and the elements, Kirschling breezed through the heights, going over every height through 5-7 without a miss. But she ran into trouble at 5-8.75, failing to clear the height, while West Virginia’s Emily …

The two West Deptford track stars will have a shot at gold in Baltimore Saturday and Sunday.
For track and field, the center of the universe these days is London and the summer Olympics. But back here in the United States, a pair of West Deptford girls will get their own shot at glory in USA Track & Field’s Junior Olympics in Baltimore. Recent grad Megan Kirschling and incoming senior Megan Knoblock will both compete in the finals at the Young Women’s division Saturday and Sunday, after Knoblock qualified for the 1,500 meters with a fifth-place finish in her heat Thursday. Knoblock, in her West Deptford green, ran a 5:11.37—nearly seven seconds faster than her qualifying time at the regional level—to grab one of the 12 spots in the 1,500 finals, set for Sunday at 2:30 p.m. She’ll have a challenge in front of her, with three girls …

Megan Kirschling dominated three sports, finishing as an All-American in track.
Megan Kirschling accrued many accomplishments during her senior athletic year at West Deptford High School. However, there is one that separates her from nearly every girl across the country. Kirschling is an All-American. In the final meet of her high school career, Kirschling—who is the West Deptford Patch Female Athlete of the Year—claimed a spot with the top track and field athletes in the county, winning her second straight All-American designation with a bronze at the New Balance Nationals in Greensboro, NC, Saturday afternoon. Consider that honor a final feather in the cap of an amazing senior season and a dominant career. A three-sport standout, Kirschling possessed skill, tenacity, sportsmanship and leadership while captaining the…

The West Deptford senior cleared 5-8.5 at the New Balance Nationals in Greensboro, NC.
With one last shot at something big for her high school career, Megan Kirschling went out and claimed her spot among the best in the county, winning her second straight All-American designation with a bronze at the New Balance Nationals in Greensboro, NC, Saturday afternoon. It was the West Deptford senior's second straight third-place finish at a major meet, after her performance at the much-delayed New Jersey Meet of Champions this past Monday. “I'm happier with this one,” Kirschling said of the third at nationals. “It was a good jumping day.” Though she was sporting a bit of a new look—gone was the West Deptford green, replaced with a blue-and-black top, and her trademark ponytail had been chopped off—it was nonetheless vintage …

The two track standouts aren't done yet, with a major meet this weekend.
This year’s South Jersey Track Coaches’ Association’s All-South Jersey girls’ team has some familiar names. West Deptford standouts Samantha Budd and Megan Kirschling were each named to the team in their respective specialties—Budd for the 800 meters and Kirschling for the high jump. Both girls won South Jersey and state Group 2 titles in their events, both in record-breaking fashion. Budd smashed her own school record to win the state title, kicking at the end to take the race in 2:14.78. Kirschling broke her own school record, the all-group meet record and the state Group 2 record in winning her title with a jump of 5-10.5. She followed it up with a third-place finish at the Meet of Champions, leaping 5-8. Both girls are in action this …

Four girls who competed in multiple sports stood out from the rest of the field.
In an era where multiple-sport athletes seem to be dwindling by the year, a group of girls at West Deptford High School showed that playing one sport in the winter doesn’t take away from playing another in the fall or spring. As we continue to look at the best of the best in West Deptford athletics, the girls take the spotlight. Below are four girls that excelled in multiple sports, helping each squad in a variety of ways. Check back in a couple of days to see who is named Female Athlete of the Year. In the meantime, feel free to voice your opinions in the comments section. Danielle McKeown: A three-sport athlete, McKeown possessed the rare mix of talent, intelligence and leadership on the soccer, basketball and softball teams. She was the…
