West Deptford Might Get Extra Funds for Background Checks

Volunteers who have to pay for their mandatory background checks may be reimbursed by the Kanka Foundation.

Youth organization volunteers who originally had to pay for their own required background checks may have still have a glimmer of hope. The township received an unsolicited email from Maureen Kanka, mother of Megan Kanka and co-founder of the Kanka Foundation, which is providing funding to West Deptford for the background checks. Kanka's email said she may be able to use extra funds to reimburse West Deptford for the criminal background checks the current allotment does not cover. West Deptford only received 100 forms for free background checks. According to recreation director Greg Ley, they are approximately 370 volunteers across all of the organizations. “There's no guarantee,” said Recreation Advisory Committee chairman John DiCarlo at…

What is the WD soccer organization going to do with all its money? I thought local sports organizations are suppose to be non-profit. I'm not saying that Soccer should foot the bill for all sports organizations for clearances. Perhaps an indoor soccer building can be built at Riverwind's where the Ice Skating complex or hotel was to be originally built. In the off season it can be utilized by all…   more ›

Background Checks Could Cost WD Youth Organizations

West Deptford will receive just 100 forms for free background check and fingerprinting for its youth organizations, leaving some volunteers out in the cold.

Required background checks for all volunteers in West Deptford's youth organizations could potentially affect each organization's bottom line. In accordance with an ordinance that the West Deptford Township Committee passed in November, all volunteers involved with youth sports organizations in the township must have a background check via fingerprinting. However, at a recent recreation advisory board meeting, recereation director Greg Ley revealed that the township only received enough funding for 100 free background checks. John DiCarlo, the president of the recreation advisory committee, said the township originally applied for 300 forms. "We thought originally thought that we were going to get funding for the full amount," said DiCarlo…

I think the use of the word "head coach" leads one to believe the sports teams are getting the forms. After all, the scouts (and Little Theatre, and other such organizations) don't have coaches. But perhaps that was just a poor choice of words. Time will tell. A township ordinance to accept criminal background checks from other sources (such as the checks substitute teachers and other school …   more ›

Background Checks Now Mandatory for Youth Rec Staff

Starting in 2013, all employees and volunteers must submit to fingerprinting to participate in youth recreational organizations in West Deptford.

When it comes to protecting children, there is no such thing as too safe, so West Deptford is adding an extra layer of precaution for the kids who particpate in youth programs. Effective Jan. 1, 2013, all volunteers and employees must undergo mandatory criminal background checks via fingerprinting in order to participate in youth recreational organizations. West Deptford's township committee approved the measure at its work session meeting Nov. 15. “This is a great program to protect the kids,” said Mayor Raymond Chintall, who voiced support for mandatory background checks from early on.  The Recreation Committee sponsored the ordinance. Committee chair John DiCarlo said his group plans to disseminate the mandate to all organizations and …

West Deptford Background Checks May Expand

More adults who work with children could be covered under the background check rules, but committee tabled the matter for now.

With scandals such as the Penn State sex abuse case not far in the rearview mirror, the township committee is working to draft a tighter version of an ordinance for mandatory background checks of recreation employees and volunteers. The first reading of the ordinance was tabled Thursday night after Committeewoman Denice DiCarlo expressed several concerns dealing with the lack clarity of the ordinance. Of DiCarlo’s main concerns, was how the ordinance failed to clearly outline the procedure for handling personal information. DiCarlo feels that all information pertaining to background checks should be handled strictly by the police department—for the sake of confidentiality and to avoid potential conflicts of interest. “I think we are all in…

Penn State Scandal Prompts New Policy for West Deptford Youth Sports

The West Deptford Recreation Advisory Committee pushes through a recommendation for mandatory criminal checks on all youth sport coaches.

In the wake of the Jerry Sandusky sex scandal at Penn State, the West Deptford Recreation Advisory Board is making moves to strengthen security for its children by instituting new policies for youth sports.  With the help of the Megan Nicole Kanka Foundation, the "Check Em' Out" program will give the township the opportunity to run background checks on youth coaches across all the township's sports programs. The recommendation for the new policy was approved by the recreational advisory board during their June meeting and is pending approval from the township committee. If the motion passes, coaches and assistant coaches will be fingerprinted through the end of the year, with the costs borne by the “Check Em’ Out” program. “A 10- to 15-…
