Sullivan, Knoblock Put Pen to Paper on National Signing Day

West Deptford's Megan Sullivan (Temple) and Megan Knoblock (Towson) will continue their academic and athletic careers at the collegiate level.

While many kids, and even adults, cringe at the thought of going to the dentist, West Deptford senior Megan Sullivan doesn't have any anxiety come checkup time. Even as a kid, the dentist wasn't a scary place for her to visit. For her, the experience was often a positive one and now she wants to return the favor. “When I was growing up I had really bad teeth,” said Sullivan, with a laugh. “The orthodontist gave me confidence and it’s something I want to be able to do. I want to make other people feel as confident as I do.” Sullivan signed her letter of intent to Temple University Wednesday morning, during National Signing Day. At Temple, she will study biology in pursuit of a career as an orthodontist. She'll also continue her athletic …

Eagles Eliminated in Crushing Fashion

West Deptford dominated play but couldn't find the net in a 1-0 loss to Cinnaminson in the Group 2 semifinals.

Rarely are South Jersey semifinal soccer games as one-sided as the contest between the West Deptford High School girls’ soccer team and Cinnaminson, Tuesday afternoon. No. 4 West Deptford possessed the ball throughout the entire game, kept the ball on Cinnaminson’s side of the field for about 75 of the 80 minutes, and limited the Pirates to one shot on goal. If it were a boxing match, Cinnaminson would not have been awarded a single round. But soccer can be cruel at times and the sport issued the harshest of lessons to the Eagles, ending their season. Janea Dockins scored on Cinnaminson’s only shot on target and the Pirates bunkered down the rest of the way, recording a 1-0 victory in the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 2 semifinals. No. 8 …

Sullivan, Furfari Filling up the Net for Eagles

Megan Sullivan and Tina Furfari have combined to score 15 goals in eight games this season.

After losing a handful of talented seniors to graduation, the West Deptford High School girls' soccer team needed a player to step up to fill the void. Fortunately for the Eagles, two girls stepped up early in the season and haven't stopped scoring since. Megan Sullivan and Tina Furfari have combined to score 15 goals in eight games, helping West Deptford to a 6-2 record. “Everybody has been contributing,” said Sullivan, who has a team-high eight tallies. “We have a lot of different goal scorers but we needed somebody to step up and score so I feel like as I move forward it’s my responsibility to put the ball in the back of the neck.” Sullivan sensed scoring could be an issue for the team early in the preseason and figured it would be up …

WDHS Girls' Soccer Preview: Back to the Top

West Deptford is looking to get back to the top of the Colonial Conference Liberty Division.

The West Deptford High School girls’ soccer team lost only lost five games in 2011—unfortunately, three of those losses came against rival Haddonfield, including a 1-0 loss in the South Jersey Group 2 semifinals in which the only goal was scored on a penalty kick. It was Haddonfield that blocked the Eagles from defending their Colonial Conference Liberty Division title and a chance at a Group 2 championship. So it’s no secret: If the Eagles are to get back atop the division, or Group 2, they must find a way to beat the Bulldawgs. West Deptford head coach Veronica McGinniss said the players are confident they can overcome their rivals. “I think they know it is obtainable and that is the big game for us every season,” she said. “Every time …
