Historical Treasures Unearthed at Red Bank Battlefield Dig
A small dig at the Whitall House uncovers several artifacts—some even prehistoric—at a battlefield mostly known for the Revolutionary War.
One by one, the objects materialized from the ground: ancient pottery, porcelain, a Colonial candlestick, even a 19th-century presidential button. A small archaeological dig unearthed big artifacts at the Whitall House Friday morning. The dig shed some light on these items, but helped make the house a little more convenient to tourists with the installation of a wheelchair accessible ramp. Within an hour, Pete Matranga and his crew from the URS firm had already dug to soil dating back 10,000 years. Digging a square hole, the crew carefully recorded the layers of soil and screened for artifacts. OMG I am a resident of West Deptford for 25 years...love going to the battlefield...went to the Whittal house at Christmas. feel like I was there at some point. So excited that there is still work and digs being done there. so much history more ›
