A Taste of Philly Pretzel Bakery Aids Efforts in Hurricane Sandy Relief

Owner Mark Rossi opens his business to donations for those affected by Hurricane Sandy.

While Hurricane Sandy left a path of destruction along the Jersey Shore and the upper East Coast, West Deptford and neighboring towns were fortunate to only sustain minimal damage, if any. Yet, for West Deptford resident Mark Rossi and his Woodbury-based business A Taste of Philly Pretzel Bakery, recovery for the rest of New Jersey is now a main focus.     “We would like to see all residents get back on their feet”, said Rossi, referring to those who were hit harder by Hurricane Sandy. Earlier last week, Rossi donated pretzels from his bakery to a friend who drove up to Red Bank. Get a Free Doughnut, and History Lesson, Today

National Doughnut Day's traditions date back to the front lines of World War I.

Today is National Doughnut Day, and area Dunkin’ Donuts are getting in on the action by offering free doughnuts. But it turns out there’s more to today than a tempting treat. This year marks the 73rd National Doughnut Day, an event created by the Salvation Army. It may seem like an unlikely pairing, but the Salvation Army is credited with introducing the sweet treat to Americans. During World War I, Salvation Army “lassies,” who worked on the front lines getting essential personal items to soldiers, distributed doughnuts to troops in Europe.
