Wind Advisory in Effect as Storm Approaches South Jersey

Packing a serious punch to surrounding states, a storm is making landfall in South Jersey.

A storm packing strong winds and heavy rainfall is barreling into South Jersey, with the heaviest weather still to come. With significant snowfall already in  parts of Maryland and Pennsylvania, Lee Robertson, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, says South Jersey can expect to see snowfall begin this afternoon, around rush hour. Robertson explains that the majority of snowfall will occur during the evening, and into the overnight hours. “It’s a very slow moving storm at this point,” says Robertson. While this storm has already hit hard in places, such as our nation’s capital, shutting down schools and federal offices with an expected 10 inches of snow as reported by CNN, most of South Jersey can expect much …

Snow Still Coming—But How Much?

The National Weather Service says we can still expect snow, just not a lot of it.

Get ready for some "fluffy" snow, West Deptford. While the forecast has changed a bit since the early part of the week, it does still look South Jersey will get some snow beginning Friday afternoon. As of Thursday at 8 a.m., the National Weather Service (NWS) in Mount Holly was calling for the storm to drop between 1 and 4 inches of snow in South Jersey. West Deptford is forecasted to be on the low end of the scale at 1 inch. "It looks to us like it's going to snow," NWS meteorologist Walter Drag said. "We just don't know how much yet. It looks to us like somewhere in the 1- to 4-inch range." The snow, which Drag described as "fluffy," is expected to start Friday afternoon and last through Friday night. Temperatures are not expected to top…

'Plowable' Amount of Snow Headed to West Deptford Friday

Meteorologists are tracking a snowstorm this weekend.

Update, 8:30 a.m., Jan. 24: West Deptford should be spared from a heavy snowfall. Get the updated forecast at Snow Still Coming—But How Much?. ------------- If dealing with freezing temperatures every day this week wasn’t enough, West Deptford can now expect a “plowable” amount of snow on Friday. According to meteorologists with the National Weather Service (NWS) in Mount Holly, a low pressure system is moving over the area Friday, bringing even colder temperatures and a snowstorm. Kristin Kline, of the NWS, said officials do not have specific amounts as far as accumulation goes just yet, but it could be “several inches.” Meteorologists will know more Wednesday and Thursday. The snow is slated to start Friday afternoon and last into the …

White Christmas? Not Very Likely, Weather Service Says

An unseasonably warm winter thus far casts doubt on holiday snow hopes.

Take a cue from Irving Berlin and keep dreaming of a white Christmas, because that’s all you can do this year. If you trust the National Weather Service (and why wouldn’t you?), the best we can hope for is a wet Christmas. “It looks like for South Jersey we’re not expecting much more than rain right now (over the weekend),” said meteorologist Valerie Meola. Meola said the current forecast for Sunday calls for temperatures in the mid-30s to mid-40s, with about a 40 percent chance of rain. She said there’s a slight chance of a wintry mix overnight Saturday, “but it warms right back up … Right now we’re running much too warm (for snow).” No surprise there really. December 2011 has been somewhat unseasonably warm thus far, especially when …

Winter's Not Over Yet—Storm Coming Overnight

The National Weather Service predicts 3 to 5 inches for the township.

The county freeholders approved additional room in the budget for salt supplies at their meeting last week. Maybe they knew something the rest of us didn't. You can forget those warm, spring-like days last week and pull out the boots and gloves—West Deptford and Gloucester County are under a winter weather warning through Tuesday morning. The National Weather Service predicts an 100 percent chance of snow and sleet before 10 p.m. West Deptford could be in for 3 to 5 inches before the fast-moving storm moves out mid-morning on Tuesday. Temperatures are expected to drop to 22 degrees tonight and hit 32 degrees on Tuesday. After a cold night on Tuesday, a warming trend should start, with temperatures in the 40s and 50s through Friday.

West Deptford Suffers Worst of Storm's Wrath

The latest snowstorm dumped as much as a foot and a half of snow on some parts of the township.

The worst storm of the winter slammed into West Deptford overnight, burying the area under a layer of sleet and heavy, wet snow. The township took a haymaker from this latest storm, with snowfall totals from the National Weather Service topping out at 19 inches in Verga, while other parts of the township saw around 15 inches of the white stuff. Verga's snowfall total was the highest in the region, and higher than anywhere apart from central New Jersey. Some residents spent the bulk of the day trying to dig out in the aftermath. “The snow…you can have it,” said Jim Vidal, who's lived at Kingswick Apartments for the last eight years. He and his neighbors were out shoveling today around 2 p.m., trying to take care of what was left of the snow…

I have to commend the people who do our streets and roads. The roads I drove in WD were totally clean on Friday, unlike the roads in other counties.   more ›

Storm Socks South Jersey

Nine inches of the white stuff expected in northern and western Gloucester County.

Acting Gov. and Senate President Stephen Sweeney declared a state of emergency throughout New Jersey just before 8 p.m. Sunday, as the snowstorm intensified. "It is vital that police and public works crews are able to do their jobs. I urge all residents to take this declaration and this storm seriously, and to stay safe, stay home and stay off the roads," Sweeney said. Sweeney added that state police and transportation officials would continue to monitor the storm and road conditions to determine when the state of emergency could be lifted. Drivers heading out into the storm Sunday afternoon found themselves in the middle of deteriorating road conditions as the snow picked up intensity. Major roads, like Route 45 and Crown Point Road were…

Businesses Weigh Storm Impact

Some, but not all close early with nearly a foot of snow in the forecast.

A snowstorm is one thing, but a snowstorm that cancels an Eagles game is a tough blow for Ciconte's Pizza manager Al Peters, who expected a brisk business ahead of the game. Now, it's a matter of when they'll close, Peters said, as he kept safety in mind, while Crown Point Road in front of the store disappeared under the increasing snow. In fact, Peters was wearing two hats–or perhaps two jackets–for the day: manager and delivery man, with his four-wheel drive pickup idling outside the front door ahead of his next trip out into the storm. Peters compared planning for a snowstorm to playing a baseball game, as he has to adjust to a new situation every time. "It's never the same twice," he said. "(Storms) are a total crapshoot." He expected…
