Josh Cornelius rushed for two touchdowns in West Deptford's 28-7 win over Woodstown in the Group 2 semifinals.
With several starters sidelined, the West Deptford High School football team knew it would take a team effort for the Eagles to return to the state title game. West Deptford got exactly that, including a big game from one of its biggest leaders, in a 28-7 win over Woodstown that advances the Eagles back to the Group 2 title game for the second-consecutive season. With leading rusher Gerald Owens sidelined with a mild head injury, senior Josh Cornelius stepped back into the fullback role, carrying the ball 22 times for 124 yards and two touchdowns. He also made several tackles for loss on the defensive side of the ball while resuming his role as the team’s starting kicker and connecting on a field goal. “His leadership this week was amazing…
The quarterfinal game will go on as planned after a nearby train derailment caused a hazmat scare in Paulsboro.
Friday’s train derailment in Paulsboro won’t derail the West Deptford vs. Woodstown playoff football game this evening. The Eagles will host the Wolverines in a 7 p.m. matchup at West Deptford High School. While the train derailment sent Paulsboro High School into lockdown and prompted West Deptford schools to shelter in place for a time, it was never a threat to tonight’s game. On paper, the Eagles come out ahead of Woodstown. The Eagles enter Friday’s game undefeated this season, compared to the Wolverines’ 7-3 record. While No. 1 seed West Deptford smashed Sterling to advance to the semifinal game, No. 5 Woodstown barely snuck by Haddon Heights. The winner of tonight’s game will play the winner of the Willingboro vs. Cedar Creek game …

The Eagles boys nab the sectional crown with a 2-2 (4-1) victory in penalty kicks over Cinnaminson Monday.
West Deptford keeper Brendan Gill faced a single penalty kick in regulation against Cinnaminson in the South Jersey, Group 2 title game Monday—a single penalty kick that whipped by him on the right and put the Eagles in a hole with just minutes left in the game. After the Eagles and Pirates battled to a 2-2 tie through two overtimes, though, Gill wasn't about to let that happen again. The Eagles keeper would go on to make two critical saves, and his teammates were perfect on the other side through four shots as No.9-seeded West Deptford won, 4-1, on penalty kicks to capture the sectional crown. The Eagles head down to Atlantic County to open the South Jersey, Group 2 tournament Monday.
A late tiebreaker revision has flipped around a pair of seeds in the lower half of the South Jersey, Group 2 baseball tournament, and West Deptford's road trip just got a bit longer. Instead of a 10-minute drive to GCIT, the Eagles, now seeded No. 15, will make the hike down to Buena, the No. 2 seed, for an opening-round game Monday afternoon. West Deptford will enter the playoffs on the heels of a doubleheader sweep over Woodbury (7-0) and Lindenwold (11-1) Thursday.

The Eagles couldn't match the Redbirds' offensive firepower.
The good news is West Deptford High School’s girls’ lacrosse team held the state’s leading scorer to one of her lowest-scoring games of the season. The bad news is that Allentown’s Alex Moore still scored five goals and dished out four assists, as the Eagles fell in the second round of the South Jersey, Group 2 playoffs Thursday, 15-5. For West Deptford, Maddie Waschko (2 goals) and Jess Hill (3) provided the offensive effort, with Emily Whalin adding three assists. It wasn’t enough to contain Allentown’s jet-fueled offense, however; the Redbirds leaped out to an 8-2 lead at the break and didn’t slow down much in the second half on the way to the win.
