West Deptford Sports Update

100s for West Deptford Softballers

Amanda Schramm earned her 100th career victory last week. Not long after, two of her players knocked in their 100th hits.

It was a week of hundreds for the West Deptford softball team. First, senior Sydney Ponto wrapped up the centenary victory for coach Amanda Schramm in a 14-strikeout, one-hit shutout of Sterling. Then, Ponto and teammate Marissa Linquist made a little noise of their own, notching the 100th hits of their high school careers in a 12-0 stomping of Lindenwold. They did it within two at-bats of one another. Linquist was 2-for-3 at the plate in the game, scoring once, doubling, and knocking in 4 RBIs. She also pitched 5 innings for the win, walking only two batters in the process. Ponto's hit was her only one in the contest, but she also scored three times. The duo, which have helped turn the team into a force in the conference, "have worked …

West Deptford Sports Update

100 Wins for Amanda Schramm, WD Baseball Draws Diamond Classic Opponent

Plus: splits for the track-and-field and golf teams.

Sydney Ponto did everything but put a bow on West Deptford Softball Coach Amanda Schramm's 100th career victory, as she one-hit Sterling, fanning 14 in the process. Ponto is herself approaching a milestone—career hit 100—in a season that has seen the Eagles assert themselves over nearly every opponent. They sit third in the conference at 13-5, just a game back of Overbrook and three behind Buena. Marissa Linquist pitched a complete-game, 3-2 win over Gloucester Catholic on Wednesday. The match-ups have been determined for the 40th annual Joe Hartmann Diamond Classic, the unofficial South Jersey high school baseball championship. West Deptford (12-6) plays Pitman in the first round, 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 11, at Overbrook High School. …

West Deptford Sports Update

100 Goals, 100 Wins, and Victories Piling up Across the Board

West Deptford High School athletics had a big weekend with a few milestone accomplishments as well.

Goal number 100 for Rachel Krott was just one of four she scored on Saturday's lacrosse match against Clearview, but it wasn't enough to pull the Eagles past the Pioneers' balanced attack in a 10-7 loss. Krott assisted on another two goals as well en route to a 6-point outburst. Boys lacrosse coach Mike Yarusso also put a feather in his cap last weekend, as the undefeated Eagles handed him his 100th victory in a 15-5 rout of Middle Township on April 6. That's a strong showing for the 8-year-old program. The West Deptford boys golf team is off to a hot start, with victories over Overbrook (196-231) on April 2, Gateway (179-222) on April 4 and Sterling on April 10 (184-188). Richie Stolz is leading the way, having shot a 43 against Overbrook…

Three Eagles to Continue Athletic Careers at D-2 Level

Brandon McCall, Marissa Linquist and Sydney Ponto signed letters of intent Tuesday.

When Brandon McCall, Marissa Linquist and Sydney Ponto take to their respective diamonds this spring, each will do so feeling a little less pressure on their arms, bats and minds. The trio of student-athletes at West Deptford High School signed letters of intent to continue their academic and athletic careers at the collegiate level. McCall, a member of the Eagles baseball team, expressed both excitement and relief about his decision to attend Limestone College—a Division 2 school in South Carolina. The West Deptford senior had his sights set on attending a Southern school and got his wish after impressing the Limestone coaching staff. He received a call a few days after attending a camp and found out the school was interested in offering …

Congrats to all three ballplayers. I had the honor of coaching Marissa and Sydney as little leaguers, and knew they were headed for college ball one day. All the best! Jim Knoblock   more ›

WD Field Hockey Completes Sweep of Haddonfield

The Eagles overcome a slow first 25 minutes to defeat the Bulldawgs 4-1 on Wednesday, sweeping the season series.

Just shy of a month ago, West Deptford field hockey avenged last season's loss in the South Jersey Group 2 championship game by defeating the Haddonfield Bulldawgs 4-1 on the road, making a statement that they were a force to be reckoned with. The Eagles re-asserted that statement on Wednesday, defeating Haddonfield again by a score of 4-1. And while the result was the same as last month, head coach Linda Decker was hoping for a better effort from her team. “We did not have our best game today,” said Decker after the game. “We were a little out of rhythm with each other with things that we were doing since the last [Haddonfield] game that we were not doing today.” The Eagles took awhile to get going on Wednesday. A few penalty corner …

WDHS Field Hockey Preview: A Wealth of Experience

West Deptford returns nine seniors from a team that reached the South Jersey finals last season.

Leadership is a quality often sought after by high school coaches when assembling a varsity roster. When West Deptford High School field hockey coach Linda Decker looks out on the field, she sees a host of leaders ready to take the team to new heights. That’s what happens when you have the luxury of returning eight senior starters. Captains Sydney Ponto, Rachel Krott and Claudia Therault highlight a group of nine seniors who are hoping to not only return to the South Jersey Group 2 title game, but win it. “The seniors are very hard workers and a tight-knit group,” said Decker, before adding, “and they are pretty darn talented.” Krott, who is the team’s most decorated midfielder, and Ponto, who possesses one of the hardest shots in the area…

WDHS Female Athlete Of The Year Nominees

Four girls who competed in multiple sports stood out from the rest of the field.

In an era where multiple-sport athletes seem to be dwindling by the year, a group of girls at West Deptford High School showed that playing one sport in the winter doesn’t take away from playing another in the fall or spring. As we continue to look at the best of the best in West Deptford athletics, the girls take the spotlight. Below are four girls that excelled in multiple sports, helping each squad in a variety of ways. Check back in a couple of days to see who is named Female Athlete of the Year. In the meantime, feel free to voice your opinions in the comments section. Danielle McKeown: A three-sport athlete, McKeown possessed the rare mix of talent, intelligence and leadership on the soccer, basketball and softball teams. She was the…

WDHS Sports Week in Review/Preview: Playoffs Come And Go

Track and field athletes are the only ones who remain in competition after three programs saw their year come to an end in the playoffs.

The spring season wound down last week, leaving just the boys’ and girls’ track teams remaining to finish out the postseason at West Deptford High School. Last week brought with it the playoff exits of the boys’ lacrosse, baseball and softball teams, but also saw some great achievements on the track.  Below is a look back at the week that was in local athletics. GIRLS' TRACK Samantha Budd and Megan Kirschling have been winning events all season, and an increased talent pool did nothing to slow that trend down this past weekend. Both girls were dominant in the Group 2 sectional championships, combining to win a trio of events. Budd had little competition in the distance events, winning the 800 and 1600. Meanwhile, Kirschling won the high …

Garnets Softball Spoils Ponto's Gem

West Deptford's Sydney Ponto had a no-hitter entering the seventh inning, yet was the hard-luck loser in 1-0 decision to Haddon Heights.

One hit. That’s all the Haddon Heights softball team managed off West Deptford ace Sydney Ponto. It was also all the Garnets would need. Mariah Hans blasted a one-out triple in the bottom of the seventh inning that plated the game’s only run, as No. 3 Haddon Heights eliminated No. 6 West Deptford, 1-0, in the NJSIAA South Jersey, Group 2 quarterfinals. Ponto was brilliant for the Eagles, pitching six and third hitless innings, but got tagged with the loss after the Eagles were unable to find a big hit against winning pitcher Shayla Sweeney. “I couldn’t have asked for anything more (from Ponto),” West Deptford coach Amanda Schramm said. “If you can’t win a game with your pitcher shutting down Haddon Heights for seven innings, then you don’t…

West Deptford Softball Peppers Haddon Township

The Eagles' bats were red-hot Wednesday in a 10-0 win over Haddon Township.

Entering Tuesday’s game against St. Joe’s, the West Deptford High School softball team was in the midst of its greatest offensive stretch in years. The Eagles had produced 50 runs in a stretch of three games, going 3-0. Then the Eagles ran into Dominique Dandrea, who cooled off the West Deptford bats, surrendering only two runs and striking out 13 in a St. Joe's victory. However, as Wednesday proved, Dandrea’s effort only sprinkled a little water on the Eagles flames, allowing the fire to spark right back up. West Deptford’s offense returned to form against Haddon Heights, as the team pounded out five doubles in a 10-0, five inning Colonial Conference victory. “Coming off the loss yesterday, it was good to come back,” said shortstop …
