The senior American Legion team executed back-to-back squeeze bunts and pulled away for a 12-4 win over Bordentown.
Leading by a run in the sixth inning, the West Deptford American Legion baseball team loaded the bases and then deployed an often successful, yet rarely used bit of strategy. West Deptford executed the suicide squeeze bunt. And then the team did it again. West Deptford scored two runs on the back-to-back squeezes, gaining some breathing room before pulling away for a 12-4 win over Bordentown, Friday night “When I got the call from the coach, I knew I had to get it done, so I was going to do all I could to get the squeeze down and make sure we got the run in,” said Isaiah Easterling, who executed the second bunt. “They folded after we put those runs on them.” Nick DeFrank opened the sixth with a single and Jason Fox was hit by a pitch to …

Jason Fox pitched five scoreless innings in West Deptford's 11-0 win over Monsignor Donovan.
Jason Fox carved out quite a resume as part of the West Deptford High School baseball team. He was a consistent hitter and developed into a top-of-the-rotation pitcher. Now that he has a year of college under his belt, both his pitching and hitting are even better. Fox pitched five scoreless innings, helping the West Deptford American Legion team score a 11-0 mercy-rule win over Monsignor Donovan in the District 4 opener for both teams at Union Field. Fox said he learned a tremendous amount about pitching during his freshman year at Stockton University and that he feels like a completely different pitcher compared to where he was a year ago when he helped lead West Deptford High School to a Group 2 championship. “You learn how to pitch,” …

Tom Jakubowski was a top performer for the football, basketball and baseball teams.
When asked to identify his favorite moment of his athletic year, West Deptford High School senior Tom Jakubowski had plenty of choices to contemplate before answering. He could have pointed to any one of his eight touchdowns as part of the football team. He could have picked out either one of the two interceptions he had in the Group 2 championship win over Haddonfield. Or he could have picked out his 100th career hit with the baseball team. After all, baseball is his top sport, and the one he will play at the Division I level at Long Island University next year. However, Jakubowski didn’t need time to reflect, and it wasn’t the baseball diamond or the football field that set the background. It was the basketball court. “For me personally…

A look at the top performers from the 2011-2012 high school athletic year.
Boys’ sports teams at West Deptford High School racked up the championships over the last eight months. From football to wrestling to golf, great team and individual performances abounded. Today, we take a look at the best individual performers. Narrowing a year’s worth of talented athletes down to just four was not easy and picking a sole winner from the group will be even tougher. Below is a brief description of the four finalists. Feel free to add your input or choice in the comments section. Gerald (Towns) Owens: It’s hard to imagine that the West Deptford football team would have reached the heights it did if not for the tremendous production from Owens. After starting the season as part of a deep committee, Owens broke out from the …

The football team went 11-1, set the South Jersey record for points, and had a string of five-straight shutouts. That Group 2 title was pretty sweet, too.
In a season where the West Deptford High School football team broke the South Jersey scoring record, the offensive unit was still outshined at times by the team’s defense. Yes, that’s how dominant the Eagles were last fall. The Eagles scored 517 points in 12 games (43 points a game), while also putting together a five-game shutout streak in a season that ended with a Group 2 championship. The only thing that was missing was a conference title, but the Eagles more than redeemed themselves by taking out Colonial Conference champion Haddonfield in the Group 2 final. Gerald (Towns) Owens was a major reason for the team’s success, shedding 25 pounds from the previous year to become a workhorse back with the rare combination of brute strength …

Three players from three different high schools, all with West Deptford connections, will take the field in the annual all-star tournament.
A trio of players with West Deptford connections will be featured in the annual Carpenter Cup Classic, the postseason all-star tournament pitting teams from around the region for a shot at glory at Citizens Bank Park. Senior first baseman Tom Jakubowski is the only West Deptford High School player on the Olympic-Colonial squad, but he’ll be joined by fellow township native and Bishop Eustace ace Keith Wallace. And by a chance of scheduling, Jakubowski and Wallace are slated to face off against Tri-Cape in their opener, which has its own West Deptford player in Gloucester Catholic’s Elliott McCummings. Olympic-Colonial and Tri-Cape play at 9 a.m. June 11 at Ashburn Field in FDR Park in Philadelphia, with the winner moving on to play June 14…

A look back at a busy week in Eagles sports.
Last week saw the return of the boys’ lacrosse team’s leader, a solid performance by Kevin Brockway at the Carl Arena/Al Rifkin Memorial Tournament, and a walk-off win by the baseball team. Oh, and two players reached career milestones. One can only imagine what will happen this week as the NJSIAA playoff cutoff dates arrive. Below is a look back at the week that was in West Deptford sports, as well as a glimpse at this week’s schedule. BOYS' LACROSSE After separating his shoulder during a fall in the preseason, Nick Reardon was not expected to be back of the field for the Eagles this season. However, after over a month of intense rehab, he made his return last week, scoring two goals against Bishop Eustace to reach the century mark for …

Brendan Glass pitched out of a first-and-third, no-out jam to help West Deptford win its third straight game.
By being the pitcher of record when the West Deptford High School baseball team took the lead on Overbrook, senior Brendan Glass officially earned the win. He should have been credited with a save, as well. Glass entered a tie game in the bottom of the fifth with runners on first and third and no outs. He proceeded to get two strikeouts and, after a walk, induced a fly out to center that ended the threat and fired up his teammates. The Eagles would take the lead for good on a sacrifice fly by Ty Castellano as the team earned its season-high third-straight victory, 4-3. “I felt like I needed to get that strikeout right away, and once I got the first one, I felt like I could get another one,” Glass said. “My curveball looked good and I was …
The West Deptford senior collected hits 100 and 101 in the Eagles' win on Monday.
Tom Jakubowski’s name is going exactly where it belongs, up next to the other greats that have been a part of the West Deptford High School baseball program. Jakubowski earned that honor when he blasted a double to left-center field in the second inning of West Deptford's 4-3 win against Overbrook to join the 100-career hit club. “That’s just a great feeling to be up on that board with all of the great hitters that have come through here,” Jakubowski said. “I just settled in, got my pitch and drove it. It’s just a great feeling that I can relax now and just hit.” Jakubowski got a standing ovation from his teammates in the dugout and the fans at Union Field. “Tommy’s been one of my best friends since we were little, so it’s cool to watch …

Megan Kirschling broke her own record in the high jump, while the baseball team scooped up three wins last week.
It was a pretty successful week of sports around West Deptford High School, highlighted by Megan Kirschling’s record-breaking performance in the jump at the Woodbury Relays Saturday. Meanwhile, the baseball team put a few checks in the win column and the girls’ lacrosse team matched its win total from last season. Below is a complete look back at the week in sports, as well as a glimpse at this week’s schedule. GIRLS’ TRACK Megan Kirschling broke her own school and meet record in the high jump at the Woodbury Relays. Kirschling cleared five feet, 10 inches to easily claim the individual title. Her jump was the best in New Jersey so far this year and tied for third-best in the nation, behind a pair of girls who have jumped six-feet. …
