Locals can bring nonperishable food items to the United Way office in Thorofare on Friday, Feb. 22.
Could your pantry use some spring cleaning? The United Way office in Thorofare is calling for last minute food donations as it wraps up the eighth annual Gloucester County Cares About Hunger campaign on Friday, Feb. 22. While 59 local worksites will be dropping off nonperishable food donations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the United Way will also accept donations from individuals as well. All food donations will be loaded onto trucks by volunteers at the United Way offices—where they will then be delivered to the Food Bank of South Jersey and re-distributed to three dozen food pantries across Gloucester County. While spring may seem so far away, the United Way of Gloucester County has already scheduled its inaugural "Spring into Action" 5K race.
With frigid temperatures and incessant snowfall, it's somewhat difficult to believe spring will be here soon. Although throwing on a pair of shorts and lacing up the running shoes may be the last thing on some peoples’ minds, the United Way in Gloucester County has already opened registration on this year’s “Spring into Action” 5K Race and Fun Walk. Kicking off at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 20, the event will feature a professionally managed 5K race and one-mile fun walk course. The United Way of Gloucester County is looking for area employers to help sponsor this year's Gloucester County Cares About Food Drive.
The United Way of Gloucester County, will hold its eighth annual Gloucester County Cares About Food Drive during the week of Feb. 18 and needs help from local businesses. The United Way is currently looking for area companies and employers to set up collections among their employees. There were 63 employers who participated in last year's drive, with donations amounting to more than 23,000 pounds of food. This year, the United Way is especially asking for donations of the following items: canned tuna, salmon, chicken, ham and corned beef, whole grain breakfast cereals, oatmeal, peanut butter, beans (canned or dry), all types of canned soups, stews, fruits and vegetables, rice, pastas, macaroni and cheese dinners, pancake and pudding mixes…

Women's leadership has become a big part of the message girls receive at West Deptford Middle School, and now the older students are paying it forward to their younger counterparts. The middle school debuted a new program Tuesday that had three groups eighth-graders making presentations to fifth-graders on notable women leaders in American history. It's part of Lead-A-Way, run by the Mount Laurel-based Alice Paul Institute. This is the first year Lead-A-Way came to West Deptford. Barbara Smith, a former principal at Oakview Elementary School, currently works for the United Way and brought the idea to her former school district.
