The mission field is in our back yard this time, but together we can restore the Shore.
For me, like most of us in the tri-state area, summer has always meant the Jersey Shore. Of course, that meant different things for different people. My kids will tell you the Jersey Shore is Ocean City, being brought up on Wonderland Pier, Johnson’s Popcorn and Mack and Manco Pizza. Others will just as fondly remember the gingerbread houses and promenade of Cape May, or the roller coasters and nightlife of Seaside Heights. It doesn’t matter which town, really. We were united by the sandy shoreline and spent our days jumping over the same waves in the Atlantic. When I was growing up, the Jersey Shore meant Wildwood, and my ties to the town went deep. Patch staffers in South Jersey woke up bright and early on Wednesday for a volunteerism gig that hit home—helping out at the Food Bank of South Jersey. Our volunteering day is part of an initiative promoted by Patch nationwide. Give 5 encourages employees to spend five days per year volunteering with an organization that supports our local Patch communities. Past projects have included park cleanups and even going barefoot for a day. This time, we decided to do a project together. The Food Bank of South Jersey fits the bill perfectly. The food bank serves four counties—Camden, Gloucester, Salem and part of Burlington—and runs programs that Patch has written about in the past, including its Just Peachy salsa campaign. Gov. Chris Christie has activated the New Jersey volunteer emergency response hotline (1-800-JERSEY-7).
If you'd like to lend a hand in the post-Sandy cleanup, the state of New Jersey volunteer emergency response hotline has been activated. "This hotline was established earlier this year to enhance the state's emergency responsiveness by harnessing New Jerseyans' strong spirit of service," according to a press release from the office of Governor Chris Christie. The number to call is 1-800-JERSEY-7 (1-800-537-7397); backup hotline numbers are: 609-775-5236 or 908-303-0471. Wildwood on our Mother's side and West Deptford on our Father's were the two towns were our ancestors settled when they left Philadelphia. It's where our Jersey roots were planted.
