United Way Opens Registration for Spring 5K in West Deptford

While spring may seem so far away, the United Way of Gloucester County has already scheduled its inaugural "Spring into Action" 5K race.

With frigid temperatures and incessant snowfall, it's somewhat difficult to believe spring will be here soon. Although throwing on a pair of shorts and lacing up the running shoes may be the last thing on some peoples’ minds, the United Way in Gloucester County has already opened registration on this year’s “Spring into Action” 5K Race and Fun Walk. Kicking off at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 20, the event will feature a professionally managed 5K race and one-mile fun walk course. In addition, games and activities will also be held for all children. The 5K will be held at West Deptford Park, located behind the industrial park off of Metropolitan Parkway. Those who wish to register can do so by downloading a form or by registering online for $…

Viewfinder: Thanksgiving Weekend Soccer Tournament

West Deptford soccer teams make it far in the annual tournament.

Wrapping its 32nd year, the West Deptford Thanksgiving Tournament brought township soccer teams from all over New Jersey to participate, as well as squads from neighboring states Pennslyvannia, Delaware and New York for the three-day event. Championship games finished on Sunday at West Deptford Park, and with no shortage of green and white out on the field. West Deptford girls' U-14 team, Storm, took second place. After beating out the Hamilton Wildcats, the Atlantic United Armor and the Palmyra Riverton Storm, the Storm went on to Mantua Township. Mantua went on to take the title after winning, 1-0, against West Deptford. The same was true for both West Deptford U-14 and U-13. After winning two out of three matches, the U-13 Wizards went …

West Deptford Summer 5K Series Closes Out

The final race of the season is Monday night on the cross-country course.

Runners looking for one last challenge for the summer get a bit of incentive with the final race of the West Deptford Park Summer 5K Series. When they take to the cross-country course in the sixth race of the season, it won't just be glory on the line—the organizers have added the bonus of $50 gift certificates to the Haddonfield Running Company for the fastest male and female finishers. The cross-country course is the same route the West Deptford High School runners brave during the season, which loops through the woods and fields around the park, challenging runners with constant elevation and terrain changes. Registration for the race, which is $6 for adults and $4 for anyone under 18, opens at 6:15 p.m., with the start gun at 7 p.m.

Heat Can't Beat Runners in West Deptford's Summer Series

Residents and cross-country runners gather in West Deptford Park for the start of the fourth annual 5K Summer Series.

It was as toasty a day as ever to sprint through West Deptford Park Monday. What would provoke a person to run in this weather, you ask? A bear? A rabid dog? A flock of Canada geese? No, no need to chase these runners who gave their time in energy for a good cause Monday night. Residents of West Deptford and neighboring towns braved stifling heat and humidity to run in the annual 5K Summer Series. Created four years ago by Tom Thomasson, Rutgers-Camden's associate athletic director, and Mark Drummond, West Deptford High School's boys' cross-country coach, the event creates a way for the local running community to come together and raise money for the West Deptford cross-country team. Proceeds from the five runs help pay for camp for the …

West Deptford Summer 5K Race Series Returns Next Week

The annual five-race series kicks off next Monday in West Deptford Park.

The heat is on, and so is the West Deptford Summer Series. The annual 5K races, which benefit the West Deptford High School cross-country program, return next week for five weeks of road and cross-country action in and around West Deptford Park. Don’t expect commemorative T-shirts or medals, though—it’s a no-frills chance to go out and test yourself against the heat and runners from around the area. The series opens and closes with races on the West Deptford High School cross country course, which cuts through the fields inside the park and the forests around it, over bridges, down muddy paths and the asphalt jogging trail. The middle three races are on the road course through the industrial park. While the first of the three road races is…

West Deptford Girls' Soccer Ready For Haddonfield In Semifinal

The Eagless dominated Pemberton, 4-0, to set up a semifinal matchup with Haddonfield Monday.

Even when the players and coaches were being diplomatic at the start of the playoffs, it was clear see that there was one matchup in particular the West Deptford High School girls’ soccer team wanted. And after Thursday’s victory, there is no need to dance around the subject anymore: West Deptford is getting Haddonfield in the semifinals. The No. 4 Eagles earned that right with a coast-to-coast 4-0 victory over Pemberton Thursday at Weber Field in West Deptford Park. The Eagles dominated possession and were rarely threatened in a victory that sets them up for a showdown at the rival Bulldawgs on Monday at 2 p.m. Haddonfield won both regular season meetings by one goal, helping it earn the Colonial Conference Liberty Division title. Viewfinder: West Deptford Girls' Soccer Bounces Buena

The Eagles advanced to the second round of the South Jersey, Group 2 playoffs with the win.

Six different players scored as the West Deptford High School girls' soccer team trounced Buena, 6-1, in the opening round of the South Jersey, Group 2 playoffs at West Deptford Park Monday. The Eagles will host a second-round game against Pemberton, the No. 5 seed, Thursday at 2 p.m.

Second-Half Surge Leads Eagles Girls' Soccer to Playoff Win

The side had little probelm against Buena, winning 6-1 in the first-round match up.

By failing to fully capitalize on 40 dominant minutes of soccer, the West Deptford High School girls' soccer team left open the possibility of some drama in the second half of its playoff opener against Buena. It never got beyond a possibility, though, and that's just the way the Eagles like it. No. 3 West Deptford scored four unanswered goals in the second half to pull away in a 6-1 win over No. 13 Buena in the first round of the NJSIAA South Jersey, Group 2 playoffs Monday afternoon at West Deptford Park. The Eagles thoroughly outplayed the Chiefs in the first half, but were unable to capitalize on many of their opportunities, as shots clanked off the posts or went wide or high, and clung to a 2-1 lead at the break. At halftime they were…
