Plus: splits for the track-and-field and golf teams.
Sydney Ponto did everything but put a bow on West Deptford Softball Coach Amanda Schramm's 100th career victory, as she one-hit Sterling, fanning 14 in the process. Ponto is herself approaching a milestone—career hit 100—in a season that has seen the Eagles assert themselves over nearly every opponent. They sit third in the conference at 13-5, just a game back of Overbrook and three behind Buena. Marissa Linquist pitched a complete-game, 3-2 win over Gloucester Catholic on Wednesday. The match-ups have been determined for the 40th annual Joe Hartmann Diamond Classic, the unofficial South Jersey high school baseball championship. West Deptford (12-6) plays Pitman in the first round, 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 11, at Overbrook High School. …

As my brother is inducted into the WD Sports Hall of Fame, we all look back at his biggest challenge—his battle with cancer.
I guess it shouldn’t come as a surprise, and yet it always does. Time passes. We grow up and grow old. Memory fades. It seems like we’ve barely reached our feet when suddenly we’ve been running for so long, so fast, that we forget to check out the scenery. And we try not to slow down, because we’re so afraid we won’t be able to run that fast again. It’s nice, then, that every once in a while life makes us take a breath. We get a moment to look back in wonder. We enjoy an afternoon of remembering goals set when we were younger, celebrating old triumphs, appreciating the people who shared our race and helped us on our way. That’s the way it was Sunday afternoon at this year’s induction ceremony for the West Deptford High School Athletic Hall…

The Eagles led at the break, but the Bulldogs found a way in the second half.
It all came to an end in a half for the West Deptford boys' lacrosse team. The Eagles were hanging with undefeated Rumson, the No. 4 seed in the Group 1 tournament, and had built a 4-1 lead at halftime behind a four-goal flurry in the second quarter. After the break, it all came apart. Rumson's offense finally came together, and the Bulldogs pulled ahead on a 5-0 third quarter before going on to beat West Deptford, 11-5, in the second round of the Group 1 tournament Tuesday. The Eagles were led by a three-goal effort from Mike Reardon, while Marc Laspino added a goal and Zach Kaestner logged a goal and an assist.

The golfers knocked off Deptford in their last scheduled match of the season.
The West Deptford golf team closed out the regular season with a shellacking of Deptford, winning 173-199 at RiverWinds Monday. Deptford's John Maslanik (45) was the only Spartan golfer to crack 50 on the links course. Girls' track Megan Kirschling won the high jump by nearly a foot, as the Eagles got their last races in at the Carl Lewis Relay Championships at Willingboro before sectionals at the end of the week. Watching each and every one of the inductees, I realized the true value of sports. These were NOT "dumb" jocks. They are all accomplished, intelligent, well rounded individuals who are making tremendous contributions to our society. Each one of them gave a great deal of credit for their success to their mentors, coaches and the sport itself. Just a thought for anyone who has ever questioned the …   more ›
