Eagles Demolish Schalick, Roll Toward Postseason

West Deptford boys basketball has won five straight games with just one game left before their playoff opener against Overbrook.

West Deptford boys basketball is hitting on all cylinders and they're doing it with the playoffs less than a week away. The Eagles clobbered Schalick on the road in non-conference play on Monday night, defeating them 76-45 behind a season-high 27-point performance by junior Mike Gardner. The win was the fifth straight for West Deptford. Schalick was never able to keep the game close as the Eagles ran out to a 28-8 lead after just the first quarter. The one-sided opening period really decided the game as the Cougars had no chance of making the game close again. Along with Gardner's 27 points, Justin Hansen scored 13 and Marquise Owens added 11. Gardner in particular has been a scoring machine for the Eagles in February. He has scored double…

West Deptford Boys Basketball Squeaks by Hawks

In a narrow victory, the Eagles pull off a win against Haddon Township, 50-49.

A dogfight may be putting it mildly for the matchup between West Deptford and Haddon Township's boys basketball teams Thursday night. Staying neck-and-neck with the Hawks all night, West Deptford managed to pull off a win—beating Haddon Township by just one point. The game started off in a similar fashion, as West Deptford held onto a one-point lead over the Hawks with a score of 11-10 at the end of the first quarter. West Deptford only managed to expand their lead by a slim margin, ending the half 24-20. With Haddon Township gaining a little more momentum in the second half, the Hawks outscored the Eagles for the third and most of fourth quarter. Yet, thanks to a game winning layup in the last three seconds of the fourth quarter, Mike …

Boys' Basketball Earns Home Playoff Game

West Deptford will be a No. 6 seed in the Group 2 playoffs.

From the start of the season the West Deptford High School boys' basketball team made it a goal to not only qualify for the postseason—as it did last year—but also to earn a home game. The NJSIAA released the boys' basketball playoff brackets Friday, revealing that the Eagles had achieved their goal. West Deptford is a No. 6 seed in South Jersey Group 2 and will host Colonial Conference foe Overbrook. The game is tentatively slated for Feb. 25. West Deptford got the better of Overbrook twice this season, but had to work for each victory. Justin Hansen had a career-best 30 points against Overbook in the first game of the season, lifting the Eagles to a 70-68 win. West Deptford fell behind by 12 points in the first quarter in the second …

Power Points Favorable for Eagles Basketball

The new playoff system has the West Deptford boys' team looking at a first-round home game and the girls with a chance, albeit a murkier one, to compete in the postseason.

Three weeks ago, the West Deptford High School boys’ basketball team had little trouble against Collingswood, opening up the game on an 18-2 run and never looking back in a 64-47 win. Things weren’t so easy this time around. Collingswood and West Deptford went blow for blow for 40 minutes Tuesday night, with the Panthers finally prevailing, 49-39 in double overtime. The Panthers led by six entering the fourth quarter when the Eagles (10-6) picked up their play, outscoring Collingswood, 12-6, to send the game into overtime. When the first OT session was not enough to determine a winner, the teams went into a second overtime. The Panthers (6-11) took over in frame to the tune of a 12-2 advantage. Despite the loss, the Eagles appear to have …

Eagles Unable to Slow Down Bulldawgs

Haddonfield uses a 17-0 run in the final 2:30 of the first half to take control of the game.

Thursday night was an exhibition in what can be accomplished in a short period of time. For instance, the West Deptford High School boys’ basketball team was able to hold Haddonfield scoreless for the first two minutes, 30 seconds of its Colonial Conference Liberty Division rivalry game against Haddonfield. The Bulldawgs did something a little more spectacular with the final 2:30 of the first half. They scored 17 unanswered points. Haddonfield turned an eight-point deficit into a nine-point halftime lead over the final 2:30 of the first half and pulled away in the second half for a convincing 67-40 win. “It was just a lot of energy plays that got us going there,” said Haddonfield forward Chris Biddle, who had seven points in that span. “We…

Boys' Basketball Downs Audubon, Girls Fall Short

Behind some tough defensive play and 19 points from Justin Hansen, West Deptford boys' basketball knocked off Audubon while the girls lost at home.

The West Deptford boys' basketball team recovered from a four-point first quarter deficit by holding Audubon to just two points in the second quarter. This helped them pull ahead en route to a 62-50 victory over the Green Wave. Justin Hansen led the way for the Eagles with 19 points as West Deptford outscored Audubon 12-2 in the second quarter to move ahead 23-17 at halftime. Mike Gardner chipped in an additional 10 points for the Eagles, who rode to victory on the back of a 27-point fourth quarter performance. The Eagles girls' basketball team was not able to make the same type of turnaround, as they fell to Audubon at home 44-37. The Green Wave came out firing with 21 points in the first quarter. Though the Eagles would hold Audubon to …

Eagles Agonizingly Close to Being a Top Team

West Deptford boys' basketball took another top team to the wire, but fell in overtime, 72-68.

It wasn’t so long ago that the West Deptford High School boys’ basketball team would enter a gym like the one at Sterling and hope simply to leave the gym with a somewhat respectable score. Yet, there was junior Sean Langan with the ball in his hands as time was about to expire in regulation of a tie game between the Eagles and Knights. Langan rose up and released a shot that that, while slightly tipped, still looked like it was destined to swish through the net. The shot didn’t go in, and the Eagles would later fall in overtime, 72-68, but the moment was none-the-less symbolic of the type of rise the program has seen in a short period of time. West Deptford is at the point where it can now go on the road and go toe-to-toe with some of the…

West Deptford Basketball Falls to Paulsboro

Going up against Paulsboro, both boys' and girls' varsity basketball failed to walk away with a victory.

Proving to be a tough night for West Deptford basketball, both the girls’ and boys’ squads were unable to pull out a win against the Paulsboro Red Raiders Thursday night. An early lead was key for an undefeated Paulsboro boys' team, as they pulled ahead of West Deptford early in the first quarter, with a lead of 29-5. While the Eagles managed to put more points on the board the following quarters, they still were no match for the Red Raiders, who outscored the West Deptford 67-42. West Deptford boys’ basketball will go on to play Camden County Vocational Technical on Saturday, Jan. 12 at noon. While ultimately losing as well, West Deptford girls' basketball lost by only one point with a final score of 31-30 against Paulsboro. Staying neck-…

Strong Starts Continue to Fuel Revamped Eagles

The West Deptford boys' basketball team jumped out to an 18-4 lead in the first quarter and never looked back in a victory against Collingswood.

Don Clark has spent the early portion of the season preaching the importance of getting off to fast starts to his West Deptford High School boys' basketball team. The message is clearly getting through. The Eagles have held a first-quarter lead in all five of its games so far this season, and Thursday’s performance may have been the most dominant opening-quarter yet. The Eagles jumped out to a 18-4 lead and cruised to a 64-47 win over Collingswood in Colonial Conference Liberty Division action. “We have been doing that all season,” West Deptford junior guard Justin Hansen said. “During the summer league and fall league, we were coming out with sluggish starts and falling behind by 10-point deficits. We know we have to come out fast against…
