Despite talks of cooperation in the new year, West Deptford's township committee is a body deeply divided.
Pleas for a more unified West Deptford Township Committee fell on deaf ears as appointment votes divided almost strictly along party lines at Thursday’s reorganization meeting. The meeting started out with promising appeals for cooperation. Deputy Mayor Sean Kilpatrick, a Republican, said he wanted to see the committee start 2013 with a clean slate and put differences aside. Echoing the sentiment, Democratic Committeewoman Denice DiCarlo opened by saying she hoped to see more involvement from the whole committee and not just the Republican majority. In the event of an overflow crowd, West Deptford officials have a backup plan in the works.
With an overflow crowd a real possibility for tonight’s township reorganization meeting, West Deptford officials have worked out a plan to handle a big turnout. Township administrator Eric Campo said Wednesday there have been discussions with police and fire officials about concerns related to a large crowd, and with the help of school district administrators, they’ve secured the high school auditorium as a backup location. “In the event that the fire official has a concern with exceeding the occupancy, we have a plan in place,” Campo said.
