The West Deptford High School senior shook off the disappointment of not making a top-two finish by battling back in the third-place match at the NJSIAA State Wrestling Championships.
Third place is not first place, and Rory Bonner knows it. But the 195-pound West Deptford High School senior shook off the disappointment of missing a top-two finish by battling back in the third-place match at the 2013 NJSIAA State Wrestling Championships last weekend. That he earned the final victory of his high-school career over Matt Moore of Brick Township just yielded added satisfaction. Moore had pinned Bonner in a preseason tournament, and the Eagle had not forgotten that. "My semifinal match, I made a few mistakes and lost the match," Bonner told Patch on Monday. "I went back and got third." "It’s the second-highest place ever in school history," said West Deptford athletic director Tim Cammarota, who said that he "flashed back" …

Rory Bonner won the 195-pound Region 8 title over the weekend, while Tyler Kaminski qualified for the state tournament by finishing as runner-up in the 120-pound category.
Two West Deptford wrestlers have unfinished business to take care of in Atlantic City this upcoming weekend. Seniors Rory Bonner and Tyler Kaminski are making one final trip to the New Jersey State tournament this weekend to take another shot at an individual state title. Bonner will enter the state tournament as the top seed in the bottom half of the 195-pound bracket. This comes after he won the Region 8 title for the 195-pound weight class over the weekend, pinning Ed Shockley of Millville in the championship match. The senior earned pins in all three of his victories on the path to his title. Bonner finished the Region 8 tournament in third place as a junior. He wrestled at 182 pounds last season. As the No. 1 seed in his half of the …

West Deptford was eliminated from the playoffs by a single point.
It was a long bus ride home from Barnegat for the West Deptford High School wrestling team Monday night. The No. 5 Eagles went toe-to-toe with No. 4 Barnegat in the opening round of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 2 Tournament, winning eight of the 14 bouts. Unfortunately, West Deptford scored just two pins and suffered a heart-breaking 31-30 loss. The final blow came when freshman Cameron Shields was hit with a disqualification with just 11 seconds left in the final match of the night. The ruling turned a three-point decision into a six-point verdict, which altered the course of the playoffs. First-year head coach Christian Scannell said the younger wrestlers must use the bad experience as a learning tool going forward. “It’s devastating …

No. 5 West Deptford wrestling will travel to take on No. 4 Barnegat on Monday.
The West Deptford High School wrestling team will open up the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 2 playoffs on the road as a No. 5 seed. The Eagles will travel to take on No. 4 Barnegat on Monday. If the opponent seems like it’s a familiar one, that’s because it is. West Deptford and Barnegat met in the quarterfinals last year with the Eagles pulling out a 34-27 win. Delsea is the No. 1 seed, while Clayton is the No. 2 seed. Both teams received a first-round bye. The other quarterfinal features No. 3 Highland hosting No. 6 Gateway. The Eagles (12-8) wrap up their regular season tonight at home against Woodstown. Barnegat finished 12-10. The Eagles' recent winning streak pays off in power points as they move into a potential playoff position with two weeks remaining before the cutoff date.
A string of five consecutive wins in just over a week for West Deptford wrestling has vaulted them into fourth place in the South Jersey Group 2 power points standings with the regular season winding down. The Eagles increased their power points to 25.33 and vaulted over Barnegat, Middle Township and conference-rival Gateway/Woodbury to climb into fourth in the standings. This puts them in position to reach the team playoffs if the season were to end today. The top six teams in each group qualify for the team playoffs. Above the Eagles, the top three did not change. Despite suffering the first losses of the season, Delsea remained comfortably in first place. Clayton/Glassboro continues to hold off Highland for the second spot in the …

With a few recent wins yet to be added in, West Deptford is on the cusp of joining the top six teams in the South Jersey Group 2 power points.
West Deptford wrestling appears headed in the right direction, especially after the unveiling of the NJSIAA's latest power points standings. Despite the Eagles' two wins over the weekend and victory over Haddon Heights on Monday not being included in the latest standings, West Deptford actually moved up one spot, to seventh. Their power points total dropped just a notch from last week, going from 24.33 to 24.25. The only new match included in West Deptford's total for this week was their tiebreaker loss to Haddonfield. At the top, Clayton/Glassboro jumped just ahead of Highland for second place. Both schools remain over two full points behind undefeated Delsea. The Eagles are currently just one-fourth of a point behind Gateway/Woodbury in …

The Eagles have now won three of their last four matches after a dominating performance on Monday night against the Garnets.
Coming off a weekend where they went 2-1 in a quad-meet, West Deptford wrestling continued to rebound nicely from its heartbreaking loss against Haddonfield last Wednesday with a 58-16 victory over conference-rival Haddon Heights. The Eagles lost just two matches on Monday night as they cruised past a Haddon Heights team that has now lost four of its last five. West Deptford recorded eight pins on the night, including ones by Griffin Bonner and Tyler Kaminski. Sophomore Walt Vickery and junior Dustin Zuzulock each earned pins just one minute into their respective matches. Senior Rory Bonner also kept his undefeated streak going on Monday, earning a 17-5 major decision over Garnets senior Phillip Azzari in a huge matchup between two top …

West Deptford wrestled Haddonfield to a 36-36 tie before the eighth tiebreaker finally gave the Bulldawgs the victory.
There’s an old expression that goes "a tie is like kissing your sister." Sometimes, however, a tie is better than the alternative. The scoreboard read 36-36 after all 14 matches were complete in Wednesday’s Colonial Conference Liberty Division wrestling showdown between West Deptford High School and rival Haddonfield, but a winner still needed to be determined. One by one, the official and the two head coaches went down the list of credential tiebreakers, hoping to find one that would end the deadlock. Total wins didn’t do it. Pins didn’t either. Finally, on the eighth tiebreaker—total first points—a winner was announced. By scoring first in eight of the 14 matches, that winner was Haddonfield. “You never like a loss, but these ones sting …
The Eagles' early season losses in December hurt as they find themselves just outside the top-6 playoff spots in the first power points of 2013.
West Deptford wrestling's slow start to the 2013 season has them sitting in the middle of the pack in the first NJSIAA power points of the year. With just one win so far, a 56-12 rout of Overbrook, West Deptford has 24.33 points, which places them in eighth place out of the 16 teams in South Jersey Group 2. The power points are as of Jan. 7 and do not include the Eagles' match on Wednesday night against Haddonfield. Perennial powerhouse Delsea is sitting in first place with a perfect 8-0 record and 29.38 points. Two other teams in the group are also unbeaten, Clayton/Glassboro with a 5-0 record and Middle Twp. at 3-0. The top six teams in each group make the team tournament, putting the Eagles on the outside looking in early on. The good …

Tyler Kaminski is 7-1 this season, but the Eagles wrestling team is in an 0-2 hole.
One year after starting 15-0 and winning its first Colonial Conference Liberty Division title since 1978, the West Deptford High School wrestling program finds itself off to a bumpy start. December losses to Delsea and Collingswood have the Eagles in an early 0-2 hole, yet have done little to affect the mindset of first-year coach Chris Scannell. He knows the season is still in its infancy and there is plenty of talent and character in his room to turn things around quickly. “The way the coaching staff and I look at it is we were not really at full strength yet in those early matches,” Scannell said. “We still had guys trying to find their place in the lineup and guys who weren’t certified yet because of football and things like that. As …
