Eagles' Run Ends in State Semifinals

Zach Bond scored less than two minutes into overtime to give Holmdel a 1-0 win over West Deptford in the Group 2 semifinals.

For the first time all postseason, the dramatic ending didn’t go the Eagles’ way. Zach Bond scored one minute, 55 seconds into overtime to give the Holmdel High School boy's soccer team a 1-0 victory over West Deptford in the NJSIAA Group 2 State semifinals, at Toms River East on Wednesday night. The victory sent Holmdel to its third-consecutive state final, which will be contested Saturday at the College of New Jersey. “It was a long journey getting back to the finals and it started in the preseason,” said Bond. “Five months of hard work and it pays off at this moment. Now we have to get ready to play one of the best games of our lives.” For West Deptford, the loss brings to an end an incredible postseason run that saw the Eagles …

Gill's Saves, 'Devine' Intervention Key in WD Soccer's South Jersey Title

The Eagles boys nab the sectional crown with a 2-2 (4-1) victory in penalty kicks over Cinnaminson Monday.

West Deptford keeper Brendan Gill faced a single penalty kick in regulation against Cinnaminson in the South Jersey, Group 2 title game Monday—a single penalty kick that whipped by him on the right and put the Eagles in a hole with just minutes left in the game. After the Eagles and Pirates battled to a 2-2 tie through two overtimes, though, Gill wasn't about to let that happen again. The Eagles keeper would go on to make two critical saves, and his teammates were perfect on the other side through four shots as No.9-seeded West Deptford won, 4-1, on penalty kicks to capture the sectional crown. Eagles Stun Bulldawgs in Quarterfinals

No. 9 West Deptford boys' soccer defeats first-place Haddonfield, 1-0, Saturday in the Group 2 quarterfinals.

There are wins. There are playoff wins. And then there is the type of win the West Deptford High School boys’ soccer team experienced Saturday afternoon. Led by a goal less than two minutes in and a phenomenal defensive performance, the Eagles excised past demons while also keeping their playoff run alive in a 1-0 win over Haddonfield, at Scout Field. Senior Joey Mingrino scored one minute, 38 seconds into the game and Brendan Gill made the goal stand up with several key saves, helping No. 9 West Deptford end a five-game losing streak against No. 1 Haddonfield. “I can’t even describe it,” said Mingrino. “I was probably the happiest kid on earth. It was great. I have never beaten them in my high school career and beating them in the …

WDHS Boys' Soccer Preview: All About Team

The Eagles hope a complete team effort will bring the Liberty Division title back home.

For Steve Jakubowski, the decision to take the boys soccer head coaching job at West Deptford High School straight out of college was as easy as it gets. “I knew coming out of college I definitely wanted to get into coaching and start giving back,” Jakubowski said. “I used to always look up to and admire my coaches throughout my career and I wanted to be that sort of role model for the kids in West Deptford, since the community gave so much. "Ever since I took the position, I have been nothing but excited and nothing but happy with the results we have been getting with the boys.” The work began on June 10 with a mini camp and continued with summer workouts, captains practices, summer league games at Shawnee and finally training camp. …

Brendan Gill Helps Eagles Shut Down Red Bank In Lax Playoff Opener

The junior keeper was solid in net, as the Eagles recorded a 13-6 win over Red Bank in the Group 1 playoffs.

In a sport as high-scoring as high school boys’ lacrosse, it can be easy to look directly to the offensive numbers and pass by what is happening on the defensive end. West Deptford High School junior goalie Brendan Gill understands that, but also knows his job is to make the big saves when called upon. Gill—a first-year varsity goalie—did exactly that Thursday afternoon, playing like a veteran in the Eagles 13-6 win over the Red Bank Buccaneers in the first round of the NJSIAA Group 1 playoffs. West Deptford saw an 8-3 lead shrink to 8-6 in the later stages of the third quarter, when Gill made a big save to prevent the Buccaneers from closing within a goal. Less than a minute later, attacker Mike Reardon fired home his third goal of the …
