Water Department Flushing Mains to Banish Rust

The effort to clear rust from West Deptford's water system will continue for the next several nights.

With rust still lingering in the township's water system after last weekend's low water levels in two of the water tanks, West Deptford officials have taken the step of flushing water mains on the north end of town–a process that will continue over the next several nights. The step was something public works manager Ed Phelps said was an option if the rust didn't settle out, and was the recommendation of the state Department of Environmental Protection as a remedy for the continuing problem. There may be occasional rusty or discolored water during the flushing process, caused by the speed of the water in the mains and increased chlorine levels. West Deptford Officials: Water Should Clear By Tuesday Night

Rust stirred up from low water levels in two of the township's water tanks should by out of the system by the end of the day.

Lingering rust from this weekend’s low water levels in West Deptford’s water towers should clear the system by some time tonight, public works manager Ed Phelps said Tuesday. At this point, most of the problem is confined to the north end of town, in the area along and around Red Bank and Hessian avenues, which is the far end of the township’s water system–most of the wells and the connection to New Jersey American Water Company are off Mantua Grove Road on the southern end, which was generally unaffected by the rust. Phelps said sporadic rust and discolored water, which is caused by chlorine in the system oxidizing the iron in the rust, should clear out naturally, but trying to flush your water by running it in the bathtub or outside from…
