Some West Deptford employees will see a fatter paycheck in the new year, over objections from two committeemen who said the township can’t afford it. Township committee voted 3-2 Thursday on an ordinance fixing salary grades at higher levels, amounting to a 2 percent raise for most employees. Mayor Raymond Chintall and Committeeman Samuel Cianfarini voting against the ordinance, as they did in the first reading. Cianfarini offered statistics to support his vote—such as the fact that one in 192 homes in New Jersey is in danger of foreclosure and that from 2002 to 2012 $1 has inflated by 28 percent. While the proposed salary ordinance could give some township employees a raise, not everyone thinks it's the best move for West Deptford. The first reading of the ordinance to fix salary grades for township employees and officials was passed by a 3-2 vote at the Nov. 15 township committee meeting. Committeeman Samuel Cianfarini and Mayor Raymond Chintall voted against the ordinance. Cianfarini cited the current economic conditions for his no vote. During a later public comment session, a resident inquired about the salary increase township employees could expect from the ordinance. Tom I couldn't agree more. Your comments are right on target. Too bad most of these tax and spend politicians are very frugal when it comes to supporting any charitable gestures at their own expense.
