Sweeney Tells Rowan Grads: 'Don't Settle'

Watch the video of the keynote address delivered by the New Jersey Senate President last Friday.

In the keynote address to the Rowan University Class of 2013, New Jersey Senate President and West Deptford resident Stephen Sweeney reminded graduates to be grateful for their opportunities and dissatisfied with the status quo. "It takes little effort to say that something can't be done, that a challenge can't be met and that things can't change," Sweeney told the crowd. "But nothing happens unless you act," he said; "unless you have the courage and strength of mind and the purpose to create change that you want to see." Sweeney mostly kept it light in his remarks, playing to those in the crowd who cheered when he mentioned his alma mater, Pennsauken High School. But he also reminded the class to thank those who enabled them to complete …

Sweeney: Rice Should Have Been Fired When Videos Surfaced

The New Jersey State Senate president said the national attention being paid to Rutgers over the scandal is an embarrassment.

New Jersey Senate President Stephen Sweeney said the national attention being paid to Rutgers University over the behavior of basketball coach Mike Rice has given the school a black eye. The state senator, whose office is located in West Deptford, appeared on the ESPN program Outside The Lines Wednesday afternoon to discuss the dismissal of the coach. Sweeney was frank in expressing his disappointment that Rice was not terminated in December 2012, when the tapes depicting the coach's apparently abusive practices surfaced. "Once you have something like that presented to you, there's no gray [area]," Sweeney said. "You don't have to do much of anything except take action to resolve the problem." Sweeney said it was "troubling" that the …

Steve Sweeney Won’t Run for Governor in ’13

Sweeney bows of the out of the race before it starts, saying his attention is needed to keep Democrats in control of the state Legislature.

Stephen M. Sweeney, the state Senate president and West Deptford resident, decided not to run for governor this year. Sweeney said on his Facebook page that his focus will center on keeping a Democratic majority in the state Legislature: After careful consideration and much deliberation, I will not be a candidate for governor in 2013. I've decided my work now needs to be focused on ensuring the Legislature remains in Democratic control. Is there any question about the havoc and pain a Republican Legislature would inflict on the middle class, labor, women and our seniors? For over a decade, New Jersey voters have ensured we have a strong Democratic majority in both houses and I view it as absolutely essential and my job to keep that streak …

Sweeney’s Sandy Barb Unleashes GOP Anger

State Senate President Steve Sweeney implies Gov. Chris Christie prayed for a storm like Sandy, as Republicans attack his remarks.

The state Senate president might be wishing he could turn back the clock a few hours, after Republicans seized on Steve Sweeney’s statement that Gov. Chris Christie is “lucky” Superstorm Sandy struck. Sweeney, a Democratic state senator from West Deptford, was quoted as saying Christie’s “job package is a hurricane. I guess he prayed a lot and got lucky a storm came,” according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. Sweeney, speaking Monday afternoon, was making a point that a natural disaster shouldn’t be an employment solution for New Jersey. Sweeny apologized in the next breath for the statement, but it was too late. Republicans quickly began issuing releases slamming Sweeney for his remarks, made ahead of Christie’s State of the State speech …
