Mother of Slain Toddler Antonio Santiago Sees Guilty Verdict in Case

Sherry West, whose 18-year-old son Shaun Glassey was killed in West Deptford in 2008, also lost her toddler in a robbery attempt shooting in Georgia this May.

Sherry West, a mother whose life has twice been marred by tragic violence, saw a Georgia jury return a guilty verdict in the slaying of her toddler on Friday.

Five years ago, West's 18-year-old son, Shaun Glassey, was killed during an incident in which he and some other teens lured another boy to Red Bank and Shields Aves. in order to attack him.

Then in May 2013, West was held up by a pair of teenagers who shot her and then her 13-month-old son, Antonio Santiago, when she told them she didn't have any money.

"I tried to stop him," West told the court, according to HLNTV. I put my arms over my baby but he still shot him. He walked over and shot my baby."

De’Marquise Elkins, 18, was convicted of felony murder, aggravated assault and nine other charges in Santiago's death; he faces life imprisonment, Huffington Post reports.

His mother, Karimah Elkins, was convicted of tampering with evidence for trying to cover up the shooting.

Elkins' alleged accomplice, 15-year-old Dominique Lang, has yet to stand trial.
